Modelling Groundwater Contamination Above High-Level Nuclear-Waste Repositories in Salt, Granitoid and Clay

چکیده

Modelling the groundwater contamination in the aquifer above a repository for high-level nuclear waste is a complex task. The usual procedure is based on modelling the transport of radionuclides in one or two dimensions only (NAGRA, 2002; Kosakowski, 2004; Keesmann et al., 2006; SKB, 2006; Nykyri et al., 2008). However, modern computing techniques allow to perform simulations in three dimensions, which are a more realistic representation of the geosphere or far field. This is shown for candidate repositories in salt (Gorleben, Germany) and granitoid (Olkiluoto, Finland). To date, is not possible to conduct similar threedimensional simulations for a repository in clay because the necessary input data are not available. Nevertheless, it can be shown that the results obtained from the simulations with a granitoid-hosted repository are useful for evaluating the performance of a clay-hosted repository. The objective of this comparative study is to provide tools that facilitate the identification of disposal sites and enhance the transparency of decision-making processes.

Hydrologic issues associated with nuclear waste repositories

Significant progress in hydrology, especially in subsurface flow and solute transport, has been made over the last 35 years because of sustained interest in underground nuclear waste repositories. The present paper provides an overview of the key hydrologic issues involved, and to highlight advances in their understanding and treatment because of these efforts. The focus is not on the developme...

Health Risks Assessment Due to Exposure to Vinyl Chloride in Groundwater from a Closed Landfill: A Case Study as a Contaminant of Concern and Effect of Subsurface Characteristics

The purpose of this study was to analyze the migration pathways of contaminants from closed landfills and to estimate health risks based on soil characteristics. The health risks were estimated using Framework for Risk Analysis Multimedia Environmental Systems (FRAMES) software. The sensitivity of human health risks and hazard indices due to vinyl chloride contamination in groundwater were perf...

Identifying the sources of subsurface contamination at the Hanford Site in Washington using high-precision uranium isotopic measurements.

In the mid-1990s, a groundwater plume of uranium (U) was detected in monitoring wells in the B-BX-BY Waste Management Area at the Hanford Site in Washington. This area has been used since the late 1940s to store high-level radioactive waste and other products of U fuel-rod processing. Using multiple-collector ICP source magnetic sector mass spectrometry, high-precision uranium isotopic analyses...

Transient boundary conditions in the frame of THM-processes at nuclear waste repositories

In nuclear waste repositories, initially unsaturated buffer is subjected to constant heat emitted by waste canister in conjunction with peripheral hydration through water from host rock. The transient hydration process can be potraied as transformation of initial heterogeneity towards homogeneity as final stage. In this context, this paper addresses the key issue of hydro mechanical behaviour o...
